FIRST IMPRESSIONS  by ANNEKE

My name is Anneke Voerman, and I'm a 19-year-old volunteer from Nelson, New Zealand. I am working at the Sopot Autonomous School for 5 months, where I will participate in various English lessons, and assist with teaching. Both the students and teachers have made me feel very welcome, and the School has a very friendly atmosphere. The School is a lot smaller than my High school, both in size of buildings and student numbers. But I have quickly realised that this is a benefit, as the teachers seem to have a more personal connection with the students, and the students learn faster due to smaller classes, and receiving more attention from the teacher.
Although I barely speak any Polish, both the students and teachers make the effort to talk to me, and say hello when we see each other in the hallways.

I am enjoying Poland a lot, and have been able to visit many different places in the short time I've been here. Just last weekend I met up with all of the other Lattitude volunteers in Wroclaw, and the weekend before that my host family very generously took me to Krakow with them. All of the cities I have visited so far have been beautiful, Sopot especially.

Overall, my first impressions of Sopot Autonomous School have been very good. I am enjoying the company of the friendly and hardworking students and teachers, and look forward to what the next 5 months bring.
